Details of In-Depth Workshops

Emerging Card Technologies Workshop -- Just as prepaid is exploding on the payment scene, the underlying card technology is undergoing its own revolution. The magnetic stripe, ubiquitous since the early 1970s, may begin to see a decline. Many markets in the world have committed to replace magnetic stripe with EMV contact chip cards by the end of this decade. In the United States, we have seen substantial investments in contactless technology. This workshop will examine how these technologies work, and their application in the prepaid card industry.

Money Laundering and the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act -- Prepaid cards allow funds to move quickly over great distances, disregarding country borders, and often anonymously. This ease of use also offers new opportunities to organized crime and international terrorists to abuse these products. This workshop will discuss the potential risks banks and others face from the misuse of such cards, along with how to enhance their BSA/AML programs to address such risks.

Prepaid Card Processing Technology -- Prepaid card products vary considerably from traditional credit and debit cards in the technology required to support them and the nature of the underlying processor partnership. Understanding the prepaid card processing technology landscape and the competitive advantage offered by various processors remains a challenge. This workshop will focus on the role of processors beyond traditional processing, relevant considerations in selecting a processor, and factors in allocating roles and responsibilities between processors and others in the value chain.

Servicing the Latino Market -- Latinos executed over $600 billion in payments in 2004. While one of the fastest growing markets, it is also one of the least understood – particularly for many in the mainstream financial industry. While several financial institutions are moving rapidly to service this market, many Latinos eschew financial institutions and use third-parties for paycheck lending, check cashing and money remittances. This workshop will closely examine this multi-faceted market and discuss existing infrastructure available and steps the financial industry needs to take to service this growing market segment.
